What is Passive House?
Passive house is a advanced building movement started in Germany. It aims at vastly reducing energy consumption in buildings through strategic architecture, sealed building envelopes, and energy efficient mechanical equipment. Passive House standards far exceed those of LEED or Energy Star. Bright Star is a firm believer in the Passive House philosophy and sees a bright future for energy efficient homes in New York.
Bright Star’s Approach to Passive House
For existing buildings in Brooklyn and Manhattan, Passive house begins with working on the envelope. Bright Star offers industry leading air sealing and insulation services to ensure your building is properly sealed and insulated. We also expertly install triple-pane windows as part of the building envelope to reduce thermal breaks.
Once the building envelope is addressed, Bright Star focuses on the mechanical equipment. We conduct heating and cooling load tests to determine what size equipment will be necessary. Then we install the most efficient air source heat pumps on the market and create customizedair ducts to distribute conditioned air evenly throughout the building. With a well sealed building envelope, the last tactic needed is ventilation. We install Energy Recovery Vehicles (ERVs) that improve indoor air quality and help provide fresh air to all areas of the building.
